<image:title>Home - Martina Forni, Viola Guest Faculty</image:title>
<image:caption>Viola, Martina Forni - Concertgebouw Orchestra, Amsterdam The Italian violist Martina Forni grew up surrounded by many kinds of music. The equally diverse musical activities she would later employ, from baroque to contemporary music passing through jazz and Argentinian tango, turned her into an eclectic musician. Martina Forni graduated magna cum laude at both the Conservatory of Verona and the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. Among her teachers and mentors were Nobuko Imai, Michael Gieler, Umberto Forni and Anner Bylsma. She was a member of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and played with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Asko|Schönberg for many years. In 2013 Forni joined the viola section of the Concertgebouworkest. In the 2007/2008 season, she was a member of the Academy of the Concertgebouworkest. Martina Forni plays in many prize-winning chamber music ensembles, such as the Il Faro Kwartet and Ensemble Lumaka. She also plays baroque viola and has been principle violist of Anima Eterna Brugge, Ensemble Zefiro and La Chambre Philharmonique.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - Onomatopoeia - the name</image:title>
<image:caption>Swish, chirp, boom… words that suggest the sound they describe, sound words, Onomatopoeia! It is so primal for language or at least it’s where we get a glimpse into the connectedness of life and sound in our communication through language. Music is of course a form of communication (a sound or no sound is made, and it is meant to be heard or understood) and notes in a musical phrase often function like words in a sentence - requiring inflection, breath, pitch, and gesture. And just like when we make a sound word in speech, so also we can make ‘sound notes’ - notes that carry so much more than just pitch and length. They embody something of the immaterial through our attention and care for what any note or phrase in music might be expressing or reflecting upon. Then it is up to us how accurately we translate that into a physical reaction that produces an authentic and effective sound in our instrument.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - Steuart Pincombe, Director, Cello</image:title>
<image:caption>The American cellist, Steuart Pincombe, quickly made a name for himself as an exquisite interpreter of early and contemporary music who was keen to experiment. Steuart is regularly featured as a soloist and chamber musician in in leading venues across North America and Europe including Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ, Concertgebouw Brugge, RADIALSYSTEM V Berlin, Bozar Brussels, Tivoli Vredenburg, Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center, and the Kauffman Center, but he is equally at home playing in your local cafe or brewery. His playing has garnered wide acclaim from the public and critics alike: The Philadelphia Inquirer calls him “a gorgeous player with perfect intonation, imaginative phrasing”, The Strad Magazine refers to him as a “superb soloist”, virtuoso cellist Giovanni Sollima calls Steuart “a complete artist, true virtuoso and poet, totally at ease with all languages and musical styles”, and an audience member once said “You’da asked me a week ago if I’sa gonna be here, I’da said ‘hell no’. Well I’m here - and I love this stuff [Bach]”. In addition to his numerous chamber engagements, he has appeared as soloist with ensembles such as Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop (DE), Holland Baroque (NL), Wallfisch Band (UK), Symphonie Atlantique (NL), Apollos Fire (US), and the Springfield (MO) Symphony (US). His concert 'Bach&Beer' was selected by the Cleveland Plain Dealer as one of the 'Top 10 Classical Events of the Year' and a concert in which he appeared as soloist with Rene Schiffer and Apollo's Fire was numbered in London's '5 Best Classical Music Moments of 2014' according to The Telegraph (UK). If you can't hear him live, Steuart makes regular appearances on radio and has been featured on BBC, CBC, NPO, and NPR and has recently begun recording for 7 Mountain Records in Amsterdam.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - Joseph Puglia, Violin Guest Faculty</image:title>
<image:caption>Violin, Joseph Puglia - Concertmaster Asko|Shönberg, Amsterdam Joseph Puglia has given concerto and chamber music performances at venues such as Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall (New York), Library of Congress (Washington DC), Southbank Center (London), Salle Pleyel (Paris), and Melbourne International Arts Festival (Australia). His solo debut in the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam was hailed by the Dutch press as “Exceptional” (NRC Handelsblad), saying he “brought the hall to a boil” (De Volkskrant). He is a guest concertmaster with many orchestras including the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, and Netherlands Philharmonic. He has played chamber music with members of the Juilliard and Brentano string quartets, Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Pierre-Laurent Aimard, and frequently performs in international festivals across Europe and in the US. He recorded for the Sony Classical, ECM, Attacca, Brilliant Classics, and Hungaroton labels, and performed on television and radio programs in the US, Europe, and Australia. Joseph is increasingly known for his interpretations of 20th and 21st century music. He has given countless premieres and worked with many leading composers including John Adams, Louis Andriessen, Joerg Widmann, Kaija Saariaho, and Pierre Boulez. His “Berio Project” includes a CD acclaimed by the Dutch press as “Mindblowing” (Luister magazine) and “Spectacular” (Opus Klassiek), and has led to many inspiring performances with student and amateur musicians. A creative partnership with conductor Reinbert de Leeuw included performances of violin concerti by John Adams, Ligeti, and Saariaho in Europe and the US. In his “…and Beyond” series, as leader of the Asko|Schoenberg ensemble, he uses masterworks from the past as starting points for unconducted programs of 20th and 21st century compositions. Joseph’s interest in the connection between science and music have led to a collaboration with the European Space Agency, a performance of music written by artificial intelligence, and a program titled “Music and Quantum Physics”, with his wife, physicist Stefania Giodini. During the current Covid-19 crisis he has been active online and live (when possible), having started local initiatives in The Netherlands and the creation of a worldwide quarantine recording of Terry Riley’s In C with the Asko|Schoenberg ensemble. He is currently developing and performing a series of live-streamed “Young People’s Concerts” aimed at inspiring young musicians. Other projects have included a chamber music series at the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague, which drew connections between museum exhibitions and chamber music masterworks, and provided an opportunity to display the museum’s extensive instrument collection, now in storage. Joseph is currently solo violinist with the Asko|Schoenberg ensemble in Amsterdam, and teaches on the the violin faculty at the Royal Conservatory in The Netherlands. He studied at The Juilliard School from 1994-2006 with Robert Mann, Nicholas Mann, and Louise Behrend. He received his Master of Music degree with highest possible marks at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague in 2008, working with Vera Beths. Some of Joseph’s notable musical mentors have included Anner Bylsma, Reinbert de Leeuw, Joel Krosnick, and Barbara Hannigan. A native of New York City, he has resided in The Netherlands since 2009.</image:caption>

Oerknal! - a new music ensemble based out of the Netherlands - presented INDUSTRY (The Story of Power) in collaboration with video artist Chris Paul Daniels to create a visual and aural experience exploring the implications of creating machine-like music and the consequences it has for performers, listeners, and society. The program included compositions by "Bang on a Can" founders Michael Gordon and David Lang, the wildly uncompromising Sam Pluta, ecclectic Dutch composer Bart de Vrees, and centered around Steve Reich's "Violin Phase".</image:caption>

<image:title>Projects - Collaborative - Bach & Vivaldi: Limitation with Madison Bach Musicians</image:title>
<image:caption>Bach & Vivaldi: Limitation with Madison Bach Musicians In this concert we explore the imitative writing of these two masters of the Baroque era through their use of the fugue form. Fugues are created when a musical line is introduced by one voice and then repeated with slight variations by any number of other voices. It’s always an amazing experience for audiences to hear and see how the different voices interact! The concert itself is structured much like a fugue. Starting from a single voice, the concert alternates between the music of Vivaldi and Bach with each new section of the performance requiring an additional performer. It culminates in a full orchestral performance of the D minor Concerto Grosso of Vivaldi along side a string arrangement of Bach’s own transcription of the same piece. Vivaldi has simplicity and Bach the complexity, but both play the fugue game with equal vigor! Performed with Madison Bach Musicians</image:caption>

<image:caption>Music in Familiar Spaces Music in Familiar Spaces is a project I started with my wife Michelle in 2015. We spent 13 months traveling North America, living in a 1959 trailer, bringing classical music concerts to new places and new audiences. We presented over 60 concerts and collaborated with cafes, breweries, bookstores, wineries, and more. It was an amazing adventure and truly accomplished our goal of making classical music accessible to many!</image:caption>

<image:title>Projects - Bach & Beer</image:title>
<image:caption>Bach & Beer This is a program I designed and premiered in Amsterdam in collaboration with the brewery De Bekeerde Suster. I have since worked with dozens of breweries in the US, Belgium and the Netherlands, and the concept has gained international acclaim. One of the concerts was named by the Cleveland Plain Dealer as a top ten classical music events of the year. Bach & Beer concerts take place in the brewery itself and always attract a really fun and diverse crowd. I work with the brewery to pair three of their brews to whichever three Bach Suites I'll be playing in the concert. I interlace the suites with short explanations of my historical, interpretive approach to Bach's music together with comments from the brewer on the historical brewing method of each beer. These short comments give the audience a guided listening experience that give them a fresh ear for the Bach suites and a fresh taste for different brews!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Put My Tears in Thy Bottle - a look at human trafficking An important part of my mission as a musician is to bring attention to issues facing our society. One such issue that I have focused on is that of contemporary human trafficking. This particular program - Put My Tears in Thy Bottle - is carefully sculpted with text and music to explore three perspectives on the current human trafficking situation; The Slave, The Industry, and Hope in Suffering. Pre-recorded audio tells this story as the music of Pärt, Gordon and Pincombe serve as a parallel narrative. The program was initially commissioned by and designed for International Justice Mission (NL)'s "Expressions for Justice".</image:caption>

<image:caption>What Wondrous Love for violin, cello, voice, reader This project was developed to share the simple beauty and sincerity of early american sacred music with many types of audiences. The program features spirituals and music from the early shape-note tradition in America, and is shaped to follow a believer's journey from repentance to hope in life eternal. The staging and audience seating is modeled after the traditional shape-note 'square' with the four performers facing one another in the center of the audience. This program has been performed in churches and other spaces in the U.S., Belgium and the Netherlands.</image:caption>

<image:title>Projects - The Bach Reader</image:title>
<image:caption>The Bach Reader This project was developed to work with bookstores - a great (quiet) space where people can feel comfortable to experience classical music in a casual setting. The program brings the audience into the world of J.S. Bach not only through his music, but in reading letters and stories of the composer. It features selections from three of Bach’s well-known cello suites, interlaces with readings from letters and accounts from Bach's time. The presentation gives listeners a sense of Bach as a person through stories of his family life, work and travels.</image:caption>

<image:caption>ADAPTATION - through form & function This program was first developed to showcase a special instrument that was loaned to me by the Jumpstart Jr Foundation, a cello from 1727 made by Carlo Antonio Testore. The program features virtuosic pieces from the earliest to latest music for solo cello without the endpin (1689-1875). Three different bow styles (baroque, transitional, and "modern") are used to sample works by Gabrielli, Bach, Duport, and Piatti. It's a program that shows audiences how the form of the "tools" function in creating music of different styles. This program is highly interactive, with the audience free to ask questions throughout the concert.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Schubert Swan Song for violin, cello and piano Inspired by the 19th century salon concerts, this program is designed to be presented in a comfortable setting and for the audience to get to know the man Franz Schubert through his words and music. Works include Fantasia in C minor, selections from Schwanengesang, and Notturno in E-flat. These pieces, which were written in Schubert's last compositional year, are interlaced with short readings of his letters and other writings.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Lachrymae for 5 or 8 strings, 1 piano, 1 organ, and 1 voice (or reader) Designed for and premiered by the Credo Chamber Music Faculty, this program was designed to draw listeners into the shared qualities of English music between contrasting times. Music of Dowland and Purcell are intricately interlaced with the music of Britten and Vaughan Williams to create an effective portrayal of longing and hope. This contemplative program reaches it's climax with a central moment of silence - the program then continues in retrograde. An ideal setting is a large open space with the audience encircling the performers.</image:caption>
